Reimagining Stevie Wonder’s ‘Ribbon In The Sky’

A mix of classical and boom-bap style hip-hop elements to put a twist on Stevie Wonder’s legendary ‘Ribbon In The Sky.’ When listening through the original audio, there may have been 10 different sample-able sections of audio, but I went with Stevie’s exiting rendition of what I consider to be a piano score from the great Mr. Wonder. It was simple, yet powerful enough to act as the lead role in my track. The potential audience outreach would consist of lovers of classical music who appreciate innovation in previous work, music producers and artists, hip-hop enthusiasts, and those who are looking to be caught off guard with intertwining classical and hip-hop roots.

Invoking Emotion: ‘Bandaids Over Bullet Holes’

As the head producer of one of my favorite artists, Drake, 40 has the ability to capture and create a sound that leaves you feeling thoughts of questioning and investment. What I mean by this is that the track has the ability to leave you sitting there either questioning how that song made you feel or walking yourself through the process of what the track made you think of. In the style of Noah Shebib, I wanted to capture the vibe of being underwater. What this does is it lets higher pass audio, like vocals and specific elements, stand out stronger and are supported by the low pass, underwater tones and ethereal pads that carry you throughout the track. All in all, I believe that this track successfully takes those emotional, underwater tones and in a sense, lets the audience picture what they want there. When I play this track on my own, I can hear different vocal styles, artists, new instruments, and so much more. That is the power of music.

Sourcing The Hive Mind: A Sample From TikTok

The formula for this track is basic, but it effectively solves the problem at hand. Taking a sample from TikTok and turning it into a full-length track. A massive Thank You to TikTok producer RJ Pasin, for publishing and creating such beautiful samples with his unique skillset on the guitar. A saying in the music industry, particularly on the beat-making side, is that a good sample can get you started, but a great sample can take you all the way. This sample took me all the way.

Take Me To Nirvana, Teen Spirit

Ah yes, the famous tortured vocals of the iconic Kurt Cobain being reimagined into a dark and fascinating trap remix. I personally challenged myself to take the grunge of Nirvana’s lead guitar and that oh-so-good two note riff that we all recognize when putting this track on and smash it into pitched and distorted Kurt Cobain vocals, all while throwing a blitzkrieg of a drumkit into the mix, with hihats that hit as fast as a machine gun and an 808 bass that will bust most speakers.
